On Friday 30th August 2001 seven sporting teams from Years 4-7 travelled to Boyup Brook for the annual Winter Carnival. The teams were: Netball A & B (Yrs 6-7), coached by Mrs Hutchison and Mrs Greaves; Netball C & D (Yrs 4-5), coached by Mrs Bleakley and Mrs Howlett; Football A (Yrs 6-7), coached by Mr Asplin; Football B (Yrs 4-5), coached by Mr Armstrong; Hockey A (Yrs 6-7), coached by Mr Spykers; Hockey B (Yrs 4-5), coached by Miss Bennett and Soccer (Yrs 4-7), coached by Mr Roberts.

It was a great day and the overall level of commitment and sportsmanship by our teams was outstanding. We were also very successful winning the following Shields:- Netball D, Football A & B, Hockey A & B and Soccer. The Footballers also won the AFL Lightning Carnival Champions 2001 Shield supplied by the Football Development Trust.

Sports Reports

1. Soccer Report:

Within ten minutes of arrival we were on the field playing Boyup Brook No2. With our defence superb, led by Martyn, Russell and Tim McNab, the ball was quickly repelled and often deep in our forward line. Tim Spykers goaled after some good team work by Zain, Dylan and Arion. The score at half time was one, nil to Donnybrook. We dominated play in the second half and finally scored again through hard-running forward Dylan.

Final score: Donnybrook 2 – Boyup Brook No2 Nil.

After only ten minutes break, we began our second game against Boyup Brook No1 Team. For most of the first half the ball was in our forward line but it was difficult to score. Eventually, a great long shot by Zain slipped through their goalie’s fingers and into the back of the net. The half time score was one nil. Early in the second half, a great solo run and goal by Dylan through their defence resulted in the second and final goal of the game. Boyup Brook tried hard to recover but Benn Ellard, Cyrus Carroll, Jordie, Tim McNab, Kiev and Martyn were solid in defence. Long kicking by goalie, Tristan McFarlane, regularly put us back into attack.

The final score: Donnybrook 2 – Boyup Brook No1 Nil.

Knowing a win in the last game against Bridgetown would give us the Shield we made a special effort. Though we controlled the mid-field through Martyn, Russell, Tim McNab, Tim S and Dylan scoring was again difficult. Finally, Arion and our chief talker and "encourager", Tim S, linked to feed the ball to Dylan who kicked the only goal of the first half. The second half was a different story as we piled on three goals to Dylan, one to Tim S and one own goal.

Final Score: Donnybrook 6 – Bridgetown Nil.

Though we had a fantastic and courageous goalie, in Tristan, he didn’t have a big job on the day but he answered every challenge. Mr Roberts complimented us on the fantastic team effort and the great level of sportsmanship. It was a great day and the team was proud to take only their second ever Soccer Shield.

2. Hockey Report

Two teams represented our school in the Hockey competition at this year's Winter Carnival. A Year 6/7 team and a Year 4/5 team.

Four years ago both of our teams played really well but they were beaten by very large scores by all the other teams in the competition, especially Boyup brook as they were the strongest team. For the next two years our teams improved enormously but we weren't really able to match it with the other teams. at the 2000 Winter carnival we came second to Boyup Brook - as they were still the strongest hockey team in the competition. However, we did play extremely well and either won or drew our other games. This was a great achievement for our teams, as hockey had never been one of our strongest sports.

This year both of our teams won their competitions and brought back the CHAMPION'S SHIELD !!!

Our teams are now made up of lots of people who play hockey on the weekend and a lot who are playing hockey for the first time. The important thing about our teams is that every player trained really well in the weeks leading up to the carnival and played great "team" hockey by supporting each other all the way.

That's what makes a great team!! And this year we were great!!

3. Netball Report

A large squad of netballers trained for selection in the four Netball Teams. The four teams were finally chosen (with difficulty and some disappointment). Then off we went to Boyup Brook.

The A Team only played Bridgetown and lost both games, while the B Team won one game and lost the other. The C Team had a huge win over Bridgetown and lost by only two goals to Boyup Brook. Everyone played their hardest but were exhausted after two consecutive games. The D Team had two great wins over Bridgetown and Boyup Brook and were the champions - coming home with the shield.

The school can be very proud of the efforts from the netballers.

4. Football Report

Year 6/7 Team:

This was the fourth year many of the Year 7’s had played together at the Winter Carnival and the experience and talent shone through.

Ably led by Josh B, Josh D, Scott, Nathan, Shane, and Luke, the team showed real flair in both attack and defence.

Bridgetown was the only other school to field a senior footy team and so the boys had to settle for playing them twice. (This situation I am going to address before next year).

Over 80 minutes our team showed great teamwork and goal scoring opportunities and ran out winners by over 20 goals. A big thankyou must go to all the parents who made the journey to Boyup Brook to support their boys and especially to Mr Tynan and Mr Asplin for their coaching on the day. I must also mention James Lee who played for the last time and is now in Thailand.

Year 4/5 Team:

The junior squad this year was made up of a great range of players with various levels of skill development and confidence, so it was great to see them all having a go.

Our first game against Bridgetown was a walkover, despite the windy conditions, with our strongest team outplaying their opposition in every facet of the game in the first half. Even a major reconstruction and bringing our entire interchange on, could not help make the game a more even contest and we ran out comfortable winners. Sam, Cody King, Dylan, Tim H, Jethro and Tim D led the way with some outstanding passages of both individual and team play.

In the second game, Boyup Brook were more of a challenge and gave the team a run for their money. The players had to rely on more teamwork to overcome this spirited opposition and did so extremely well. Sam took the mark of the day and Cody King fed out some top handballs. I must make mention of and thank all girls who opted to play football this season and commend them for joining in so well and being such a pleasure to coach.

Once again, a big thankyou to parents who came to watch and especially to Mr Mountford for providing not only the jumpers and waterbottles, but also his time to goal umpire in both grades.

Congratulations to all concerned in this year’s carnival.

Mr M.Armstrong
